Wolfgang Studemann was born on March 25, 1940, in Dortmund (now in the Federal Republic of Germany). He received his Vordiplom in physics from the University of Bonn and completed both his Diplom (1966) and Dr. rer. nat. (1972) in physics at the University of Gottingen. He joined the staff of the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy (MPAE) on June 1, 1966, and served with distinction as a member of the MPAE staff for more than 20 years. Studemann was tragically killed in the crash of PSA flight 1771 en route to the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., on December 7, 1987. He had been a member of AGU since 1972.
