Abstract

Writing endorsements of university promotions is getting way out of hand. I have been getting quite specific and demanding requests for opinions of individuals. The following letter is a recent instance of the kind of response I was forced to give:

Dear Prof. Smith: Thank you for your letter of 25 January asking my opinion of Assoc. Research Scientist M. King Doe. I would, of course, be happy to provide a frank assessment of Dr. Doe's capabilities since I have known him for over six weeks — ever since we were trapped together in the Cathedral Hills Hotel elevator in December.
