Archaeology–A tool to study active tectonics

Around the Aegean Sea, tectonic activity has affected ancient and modern towns and has played a role in the area's history. The remains of magnificent civilizations that flourished several thousand years ago show that towns have been buried in volcanic eruptions and destroyed by earthquakes. Ancient harbors have been elevated as much as 8 m and adjacent coastal sites submerged (for example, Flemming [1978] and Pirazzoli et al. [1982]).
