Herbert Friedman”1981 Bowie Medalist

Abstract

It is a pleasure for me to be here to speak regarding Herbert Friedman, who in 1981 became the 43rd recipient of the William Bowie Medal. I have known Friedman professionally for more than 25 years. I regard him as a close personal friend; we have competed scientifically, we have collaborated on science projects, and I now have the privilege of occupying his former office at the Naval Research Laboratory, managing the research division that he created and ran from 1958 to 1980. His current office is next to mine and I am happy to say that he occupies it several days a week and generates enough work to keep a secretary busy.
