The Long Core Development Project (LCDP) has operated at the University of Rhode Island, Narragansett (URI), Graduate School of Oceanography, for the past 10 years. The goal of the LCDP was to develop a coring system for obtaining undisturbed, large-diameter sediment cores of 50-m length from oceanic depths. A 30-m coring system has been developed and successfully tested.
Federal funding for the operation, or continued development, of the LCDP is presently unavailable. Therefore the University of Rhode Island, Graduate School of Oceanography, and the URI Long Core Advisory Committee have elected to change the operation of the LCDP.
