It is a great honor and pleasure to deliver the citation for the 1988 Fleming Medal given to Michael W. McElhinny, an outstanding scientist and a close personal friend. I know that there are always several exceptional scientists in competition for this medal; one expects only the true giants in our field to be selected. As in the recent past, that expectation has again been realized this year with the selection of McElhinny. Mike McElhinny has published more than 130 papers and authored or coauthored six books. Therefore I have found the task of singling out a few highlights in his career to be a very difficult one. Instead of discussing particular contributions of Mike's in the few minutes I have here today, I plan to present a broad overview in terms of stages in Mike's career.
