Regarding Marcia Neugebauer's plea (Eos, February 28, p. 129) for an alternative to “datum” for the name of a computer generated product, may I suggest COGEN = COmputer GEnerated Number.

Besides the accuracy of its derivative name, this acronym has the advantage of being close to “cogent,” which is defined in Webster's New Riverside University Dictionary (1984) as “appealing strongly to the intellect or reasoning powers,” something that most numerical modelers feel is true of their codes, and, thence, results.
