Abstract

This article is adapted from the speech John Hodgson gave May 9, 1988, at the 15th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Geophysical Union in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on the occasion of the adoption of the constitution that makes CGU an independent organization. Hodgson, retired Director General of the former Earth Physics Branch of the Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources of Canada, was a founder of the original CGU and is a historian of geophysics.
