WMCE Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment: A preliminary review of results

The purpose of the Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment (WMCE) was to deduce spatial and temporal variability in the circulation of the western Mediterranean Sea throughout the vertical water column from the Strait of Sicily to the Strait of Gibraltar. An international, multidisciplinary consortium of marine investigators was formed to address the following questions.

What are the major western Mediterranean circulation features and how do they vary in space and time? What are the physical forcing mechanisms? How can this knowledge be incorporated into numerical models? How does the circulation affect chemical, biological and optical processes in the western Mediterranean Sea?
