The IAHS symposium Systems Analysis for Water Resources Management: Closing the Gap Between Theory and Practice was held May 17–19, organized by the IAHS International Commission on Water Resources Systems (ICWRS).
The opinions expressed by the authors of the 31 papers scheduled for presentation and by the discussants on whether a gap exists, its magnitude, and reasons for its existence, varied considerably and covered a wide range of situations and applications. While some expressed concern about the continuing gap, many demonstrated that—when proper attention is paid to the personnel, institutional, and political concerns—developers of sound water resources management methods and tools can indeed have a positive influence on management of water resources systems.
