The IAHS symposium New Directions in Surface Water Modeling was held May 15–17, sponsored by the International Commission on Surface Water. The nine symposium sessions were on rainfall fields, physics-based hydrological models, floods, rainfall-runoff models, droughts, geographic information systems (GIS), decision-support systems, and expert systems. There were 38 oral and 11 poster papers from 24 countries.
Using GIS as a tool in hydrology has great potential for improving the spatial description and modeling of basin geomorphology and hydrological parameters. Radar- and satellite- based studies of rainfall fields show significant advances in the estimation and shortterm prediction of rainfall in time and space.
