On January 23–25, 1990, a workshop was held in College Park, Maryland, to discuss the role of the polar ice sheets in global climate change. This workshop was convened in response to a recommendation that emerged from a May 1989 briefing of the National Science Foundation's Division of Polar Programs on the findings of recent field investigations that the Siple Coast region of the West Antarctic ice sheet is experiencing major and rapid changes.
