Budget impasses damaging to science

Although the budget talks that the Bush Administration and Congress will be entering into might seem to have little to do with science funding, failure to reach an agreement to reduce the federal deficit to Gramm-Rudman targets could result in a 20% reduction in the National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Department of Energy's budgets next year. As was true last year, these reductions would be passed on to grantees.
