There is increasing evidence that seasonal and interannual variation in the western Mediterranean circulation is due to the seasonal formation of dense intermediate and deep water. This theory and the attendant questions it raises have been the topic of several papers and meeting sessions conducted as a result of analyses of the data from the Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment (WMCE). This article summarizes recent thinking on this topic.
