Global magnetospheric models

Abstract

Recent progress in modeling the observed magnetic field of the Earth and on related applications of mathematical tools to the physics of the global magnetosphere was the focus of “The Modeling and the Physics of the Global Magnetosphere,” a workshop held May 15–18 at the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The meeting was planned in conjunction with a 1-month visit to GSFC by Nikolai (“Kolya”) Tsyganenko of the University of Leningrad, who has made many contributions to magnetospheric modeling.

David Stern, GSFC, and convener of the workshop, reported that a goal of the workshop was to integrate young people into this field, and the dozen scientists who met jury-style were split 50:50 between veterans and postdoctoral or graduate students.
