Soviet/U.S./Canadian cooperative cruises successful



Three legs of an expedition aboard the Soviet ship R/V Akademik Alexandr Vinogradov involving the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences and several U.S. and Canadian groups were successfully completed between April and July 1991. The cooperative program was initiated in 1988 by Mikhail F. Stashchuk, who headed the Processes of Mineral Formation Laboratory at the Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI), U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok, and James R. Hein of the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, Calif. Stashchuk, a renowned Soviet geologist and geochemist, passed away on March 5 at age 60.
