Through a cooperative effort by geophysicists interested in the geology of Baja California, a map of the southern state of the peninsula will be compiled and published in three sheets at a scale of 1:250,000.

At the April 1991 First International Meeting on the Geology of the Baja California Peninsula, held at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur, La Paz, Mexico, the more than seventy-five participants recognized the need for a geologic map of the southern state of the peninsula, whose northern half was mapped and published in 1975 by Gordon Gastil. On January 29, 1991, a planning committee met at Stanford University to learn about tried and true procedures of map compilation and publication from U.S. Geological Survey Circum-Pacific Council cartographer Fran Mills.
