During the last 2 decades, investigators utilizing deep submergence technologies, submersibles, and deep-towed instruments have made fundamental contributions to our understanding of how the Earth works with significant advances in marine biology, chemistry, and geology. Currently, compelling deep submergence scientific questions can only be addressed with investigative strategies that require sophisticated technologies to carry out integrated studies at key localities in the global abyss.
