Rethinking federal science policy

  • Susan Bush

Setting a new agenda for federal funding for science and technology was the recommendation of a report released by George Brown (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on September 15. Federal funding should be more strongly linked to national societal goals, a move away from the current system that funds basic research without fully assessing its benefit to society, said Brown. The task force sees a need to determine whether available resources are being allocated in a manner that can best achieve national goals.
