Abstract

From March 4–7, 1992, over 120 scientists from North and South America and Europe met in Lima, Peru, to discuss evidence of past El Niño occurrences. The International Symposium on Former ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) Phenomena in Western South America was organized by J. Macharé of the Instituto Geofísico del Perú and Institut Français d'Etudes Andines, and L. Ortlieb of ORSTOM, Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le Développement en Coopération, and was supported by numerous French, Peruvian, and U.S. agencies.
