Instrument upgrades planned for ALVIN

  • Anonymous

At a recent Deep Submergence Science meeting held from Oct 13 to 14 in Arlington, Va., a need for improvements to existing ALVIN equipment was identified as a high priority by a spectrum of interested scientists in the biological, chemical, and geological deep ocean sciences. The equipment upgrades suggested for ALVIN included improved imaging systems (both optical and digital electronic), lighting, manipulators, datalogging and data management, water properties analysis, navigation display, altitude detection, and sonar imaging. In addition, given the recent development of sophisticated remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and the great potential which these vehicles have for efficiently exploring large areas of seafloor, it was suggested that new ALVIN instrumentation be modularly compatible with the new class of ROVs being developed.
