Sobering future for physics at NSF

The 13-person NSF Advisory Committee for Physics met in Washington the week of October 19 to discuss, among other topics, the future of the Foundation, the physics budget for this year, and new guidelines for proposals. Robert A. Eisenstein, the new director of NSF's Division of Physics, discussed problems facing the United States and the perception that science and technology are the solution to these problems. Amajor challenge is convincing Congress that NSF can contribute to the solution of these problems, but not solve them entirely on its own.
