The October 27 Eos news article, “NASA Reorganization Splits the Earth and Planetary Sciences,” prompts me to note that there is a quasi-cyclicity in reorganizations within NASA that appears to have the same time scale as El Niños.
Previous reorganizations within the atmospheric sciences program seem to have occurred near the times of the 1982–1983, 1986–1987, and 1991–1992 ENSOs. Although we have just had one El Niño, I now wonder whether such actions may presage a rapid recurrence.
