In an action that is almost certain to have consequences for the National Science Foundation and NASA, Louis Stokes (D-Ohio) has been named chairman of the House Appropriations Veterans Administration, Housing and Urban Development, Independent Agencies Subcommittee. Stokes replaces Bob Traxler (D-Mich.), who retired this year.
It would be difficult to exaggerate the importance that this subcommittee and its counterpart in the Senate, headed by Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), have in controlling NSF and NASA. These subcommittees not only determine the agencies' budgets, but, in many cases, their direction.
