Satellite probes plasma processes in Earth orbit

The Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES), launched on July 25, 1990, is a joint Department of Defense/NASA mission to provide better understanding of the physics of the Earth's near space environment including the radiation belts and the ionosphere. New data has already been obtained that will help spacecraft designers protect against radiation belt particles that adversely affect sensitive electronic parts in satellites, degrade solar panel arrays, and pose hazards to people living and working in space.
