Abstract

The results of the first simultaneous frequency domain and radar interferometry VHF radar observations of mesospheric scattering layers at Jicamarca are presented. Observations indicate the presence of fine scale structures with vertical extents less than 100–150 m in lower mesospheric layers and the distortion of higher mesospheric layers by gravity wave oscillations. The latter observation suggests the possibility that wind velocity measurements with mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radars may be non-Eulerian in the presence of vertically propagating gravity waves. The data also show that gravity wave oscillations may at times significantly enhance the spectral broadening of higher mesospheric radar returns, even at vertical incidence.
