The National Academy of Sciences has recently issued a report, “Oceanography in the Next Decade,” documenting the current state of the field of oceanography, discussing future directions in ocean science, and assessing the partnership between the federal government and the academic oceanography community. The National Research Council's Ocean Studies Board conducted its study through meetings and surveys with ocean scientists and representatives from federal agencies involved in oceanographic research. Institutional members of the Council on Ocean Affairs were also surveyed to assess characteristics of the academic community. Preliminary findings of the board's study were presented at AGU's 1990 Fall and 1991 Spring meetings.
