The inside scoop on “Charon”

Authors

Abstract

I was quite taken aback by the condescending and self-righteous letter from William I. Manton regarding the pronunciation of Charon (Eos, May 11). I have rarely seen such chutzpah. (How do you pronounce that?)

I can assure him that planetary scientists, on average, are no less knowledgeable in Greek pronunciation than those in other branches of science. Stern's remark was a tacit recognition of the fact that we all know we are mispronouncing Charon. The reason is not ignorance; it is a bit of an inside joke.
