Abstract

Robert Harrington and Christine Brick were each presented with a Horton Research Grant during the AGU 1993 Spring Meeting in Baltimore, Md., held from May 24 to 28. The research grant, which is separate from the Horton Award, supports research projects in hydrology and water resources by doctoral candidates at institutions of higher learning. It is awarded annually. The Horton Research Grant's objective is to foster graduate student research leading to the completion of doctoral dissertations.

Brick received a B.A. in geology from Carleton College and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana, where she is currently a doctoral student in geology. The topic of her research is the role of iron and manganese oxyhydroxide coatings in regulating trace-metal flux in riverine environments. She is investigating the seasonal formation and dissolution of Fe-Mn coatings under varying hydrologic and geochemical conditions and the resultant flux in adsorbed trace metals.
