John McPhee is the recipient of AGU's 1993 Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Scientific Journalism. He was honored for his series “Annals of the Former World: Assembling California,” which appeared in The New Yorker last September and is now available as a book.

“This is the most concise and accurate portrayal of plate tectonics for the general public,” said Don Anderson, a member of the Sullivan judging panel and the citationist for this year's award. “It offers complex ideas in a literary and enjoyable, understandable fashion.”
