The Senate Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies, chaired by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), produced a report, number 103–137, which concerns itself with the National Science Foundation. This report appears to want the NSF to become “practical,” to move away from “curiosity driven science.” I believe this to be misguided and wrong.
I support AGU's position on the role of NSF. “All technical progress is built upon basic scientific research. Development of technology resulting from that basic science and transfer of that technology to industry … are the role of other agencies and the private sector rather than the NSF….” (Eos, September 28, 1993).
