Abstract

The Tornado: Its Structure, Dynamics, Prediction, and Hazards, published by AGU, was judged “best new book” in the Geography and Earth Sciences category by the Association of American Publishers, Inc. The award was presented at the 18th Annual Awards Program for Excellence in Professional and Scholarly Publishing on February 10 in Washington, D.C.

Editors of the Tornado volume are Christopher Church, Donald Burgess, Charles A. Doswell III, and Robert Davies-Jones. The monograph provides a comprehensive account of recent tornado research and features color photos of storms and storm damage. Most of the research is North American based, but comparisons are shown to storms in China, Japan, and France. T. Theodore Fujita, a pioneer in tornado research and Merriam Distinguished Professor at the University of Chicago, introduces the volume with his presentation of the Plainfield tornado.
