In 1992, the success of French Pilot Experiment Ocean Floor Observatory (OFM/SISMOBS) showed that a permanent broadband seismic and geophysical observatory could be installed on the seafloor.
Coverage of the oceans by broadband three-component digital seismic stations will improve our knowledge of seismic sources and the dynamics of the Earth's interior, but such coverage requires both international and interdisciplinary cooperation.
