Abstract

The mystery of how deep-sea oceanic ridges—the Earth's most common geomorphic feature—are formed has remained unsolved since the ridges were first discovered more than 40 years ago. Some have argued that they orginate largely from volcanism; others mainly from faulting.

Now a team of geologists with the help of the ALVIN submersible offers a new explanation that may help to settle the debate—at least for fast-spreading portions of the Earth's crust, which account for about one-third to one-half of the ocean floor.
