Disaster prevention plan developed for high-risk volcano

Abstract

Besides being Central America's most notorious volcano, Guatemala's Santa Maria, is now touted as a hotspot for an unlikely prospect: volcanic disaster prevention.

Last November, an international workshop was held in Quezaltenango to develop an integrated plan for preventing volcanic hazards at Santa Maria, as part of a broader strategy to maximize the return on investments by focusing on team projects in natural disaster reduction.
