As a result of recent droughts and agricultural irrigation and technological trends, declining groundwater levels may well be the most important water management dilemma facing the tri-state region of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, according to a new 31-page atlas by the U.S. Geological Survey. In addition, the declines have been intensified in some places by free-flowing artesian wells that decrease hydraulic pressure and water storage in the aquifer, the atlas reports.
