Faults uncovered at Yucca Mountain

It is often true that the findings of a study conclusively show that more study is needed. Such is the outcome of a new report on Yucca Mountain, Nevada—part of the $6.3 billion federal project to characterize the potential high level radioactive waste storage site, which is expected to continue for another 7 years.

Focusing attention once again on the controversial proposed site, a team of scientists report they have discovered a different shear zone of parallel faults in the area and named it the Sundance Fault. Unlike most of the faults around Yucca Mountain, these faults run northwest-southeast.
