National institute for the environment receives kudos on Capitol Hill

Changes may be afoot for the U.S. environmental research enterprise. A bipartisan bill, via introduction by Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD), is now in the Senate hopper to create a new government agency to be called the National Institute for the Environment (NIE).

NIE would integrate knowledge assessment, research funding, public information services, and support for education and training across the various federal agencies to improve the scientific basis for environmental policy decisions.
