An article that ran in the March 15 issue of Eos discussed alternative careers in the geosciences. I would like to expand on this topic.
First, the examples provided overlook the many nonresearch niches that exist within the government. A response to the initial article (Eos, April 12,1994) touched on this omission by introducing science policy as a possibility. Readers also should be aware that the government, in general, contains other kinds of nonresearch niches that could be filled by geoscience Ph.D.s. These niches typically involve either technical writing and editing, some aspect of computer science, or the kinds of analysis and interpretation that does not fit the mold of basic or applied research, but which finds its way into both hard-copy and digital products.
