Abstract

What does it take to build a new world? More than 1 million North American students and teachers, 1600 plastic triangular panels, 2430 aluminum struts, several troops of the Girl Scouts, 4-H programs, the National Science Foundation, scientists, engineers, and about $3 million from private sources, among others.

Unfortunately, it's not really possible to build a new Earth and to solve global climate change issues. However, the collaborative “Building a New World” project, introduced last week, is an attempt to create the largest, most accurate high-resolution model of the Earth ever built and to educate students about changing global phenomena with an experimental, hands-on curriculum.
