U.S. remote sensing programs should make improved data managementa priority, according to a new reportissued by the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). Scientists will need storage andcomputer systems that can process at exceptional speeds the massive amount of data that satellite remote sensing systems will generate this decade, OTA reports. Part of the problem is that federal data analysis and management has often been underfunded. Congress might want to look over agency's shoulders to be sure plans for data management are adequate in future remote sensing budgets, OTA recommends. Already agencies involved with remote sensing, such as NASA, have recognized the critical importance of data management.
