A letter to the international geophysics community

There will be an oceanography program at the XXI General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) next year in Boulder—July 2–14,1995. Recent announcements that the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean QAPSO) will not meet in Boulder are misleading. The statutes of IUGG, and those of IAPSO, require IAPSO to meet with the six other associations at the time of a Union General Assembly. The IAPSO statutes read in article 5, paragraph 3: “With the concurrence of the Executive Committee of the Union, the Association may arrange General Assemblies and other meetings of its own in the intervals between the General Assemblies of the Union.…” No such request has been made to the IUGG Executive Committee for an IAPSO meeting.
