The article “New Law of the Sea Could Facilitate Marine Scientific Research” by John Knauss (Eos, November 8) touches upon several important points that, in my view, require further comment.
I concur with Knauss's position that entering into the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS III) may facilitate marine scientific research. However, to achieve this goal, the host and visiting nations must develop trust and shared interest in the research programs, and international scientific organizations (both governmental and non-governmental) must become involved.
