Abstract

Rep. Robert Walker (R-Pa.) spent 18 years on Capitol Hill before ascending to the chairmanship of the House Science Committee. Now, after just one term leading the committee, the congressman intends to leave it. In a surprise announcement on December 15, Walker announced that he will vacate his seat at the end of the 104th Congress this year, citing a desire to “move on and, in the process, keep a little bit of history intact.” That history is a tradition in Pennsylvania's 16th district that no representative ever serve more than 20 years in the “Pennsylvania Dutch seat” (Lancaster and Chester counties).
