One Outstanding Student Paper award was given in the Ocean Sciences Section at the AGU Fall Meeting, which was held last December in San Francisco.

Leigh Welling was honored for “Distribution of Polycystine Radiolaria and Their Relation to the Physical Environment During the 1992 El Niño and Following Cold Event.” Welling is a Ph.D. candidate in the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. Her primary research has entailed identifying and analyzing the radiolarian component of plankton tows, sediment traps, and sediments in the northeast and tropical Pacific. Because these siliceous microfauna leave behind a fossilized record they are frequently used to construct past climate, ocean currents, and ecological environments from the preserved sediment record.
