Abstract

As it exists, the U.S. magnetic-anomaly database is inadequate for meeting the nation's societal and scientific needs. The database is a collection of over 1000 individual data sets obtained over 40 years with widely varying survey specifications. Its quality lags behind the databases of many countries including the former Soviet Union, Zimbabwe, and Canada. The poor quality of U.S. magnetic-anomaly data not only impedes research but leads to misinterpretations. But though the database's problems are formidable, they are surmountable when approached individually.
