Abstract

Walker O. Smith, Jr. has accepted the title of biological oceanography editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research—Oceans, serving a term of 1995–1998. Smith received his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1976 and is currently professor and associate director of the Graduate Program in Ecology at the University of Tennessee.

As a graduate student, Smith worked in a study of coastal upwelling ecosystems, and from that training learned the value of collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to oceanographic problems.
