Abstract

Despite all the important hydrologic and ecologic questions to be answered by the recent attempt to simulate a springtime surge on the Colorado River, the public success of the experiment hinged on just one question: could a controlled flood shore up the beaches downriver from the Glen Canyon dam? Now that the flood waters have receded, the answer appears to be a resounding “yes.” But as one question often leads to another, scientists now are wondering: how long will those beaches last?
