Wake up call

After eight years of sleep, Pavlov awoke in mid-September and has been busy ever since. The volcano, 965 km southwest of Anchorage, has been fountaining lava as high as 300 m and spewing ash as high as 7500 m in an eruption first observed on September 15. Pavlov is historically the most active volcano in the Aleutian arc, with 40 eruptions observed since 1790.
