Just five hours after launch, the Russian space agency's Mars 96 spacecraft plunged through Earth's atmosphere and into the Pacific Ocean. The craft had been scheduled to reach Mars in September 1997, within a day or two of the arrival of NASA's Mars Global Surveyor.
